    The Family Business

For me, my family is the most important thing in my life. When life throws curve balls, or when you just had a long day, family is always there to remind you that your life is still filled with love and happiness. What makes this life even better, I share my work and my business with family. Namely, my mom, Michelle Duncan. Michelle is the Broker-in-Charge of our family real estate firm, Duncan Group Properties. This family business has become one of my greatest motivations, and a vessel to personal and professional growth.

I started this journey with my mom several years ago when I decided to make a career change at 23 years old. I already had my real estate license, and had only used it part time up until late 2016. A little back story on myself, I’ve always been a very self-motivated individual. It started as a kid wanting to grow up faster than society said I should. I opened my first business at about 12 years old. I bought 30 chickens, built a massive enclosure for them, and started raising them. While I was waiting on them to be old enough to produce eggs, I started marketing my business to neighbors, family friends, and fellow church members. When my chickens started laying eggs, my business took off and I started selling fresh eggs!

Then, at 16 I opened a landscaping business. I had just gotten my driver’s license, but my dad had taught me well how to pull a trailer. Soon, I had about 20 yards that I cut and did landscaping for. I did this until I graduated high school the next year. After that, I finished my Associates Degree, got licensed as an EMT, and spent my time working in public safety roles. I did this until 2016, when my entrepreneurial spirit brought me back to business. This time, it was the family real estate business. My mom had been in real estate for about 4 years at that point, and had built a pretty successful business as a solo agent. When I came along, both of our strengths combined, and our business began to grow in ways that I don’t think my mom had ever imagined. But me being me, I have big dreams and a huge imagination. So, this was no surprise to me.

Now, three years later, my mom and I have opened our own brokerage firm. I could write the longest blog post in the history of blog posts on this experience. It is truly unreal how much work has gone into getting us to this point, and how quickly it was accomplished. However, I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. I have gotten the chance to get to know my mom in ways that I never would have without the experience of building this business together. She is now my mom, and my business partner. We have argued, laughed, cried, eaten and traveled (my favorite parts… Realtor’s eat well and travel to some great conferences), and ultimately built something that I plan to keep on going for many years to come. I look forward to the day that one of my future children has the chance to join this little family business of ours!

A special thank you to all of our agents and staff that have joined us in this venture, and become a part of this family business!
